Do you think it's two-faced to act dumb?

There is a correct time and place to act dumb, and you're right in that you can learn more about a person or situation acting dumb but you're the lucky one who achieved greatly if you did as that doesn't work for everyone. Some just have to go into PI work or into business for themselves for that to pay off for them so it's at their own hand rather than someone promoting them.
