What type of foot ware do girls wear barefooted and why?

My house mates girl friend came round , she goes for the Bohemian style long dress ect. Normally she kept her sneakers on but this one time she kicked off her sneakers. I realized she was always wearing them barefooted, normally I thought girls wore sox with them and bare feet was a big no no. I thought it looked really cool though, they didn't smell or anything either when she took them off; she must of used foot spay or something, do a lot of girls now wear sneakers barefooted? I was curious what other type of shoes girls wear barefooted on the sly too and why?
